Heavy rain in Chile leaves 4 million people without drinking water
Santiago, Chile, is a pretty dry place. Average annual rainfall is just 8% of that in Dartmoor, UK. But it’s just experienced an extreme weather event; treatment plants were overwhelmed and drinking water supply had to be cut.
The rain began to fall on Friday 15 April. The Ministry of the Interior and Public Safety reported that 180 millimeters (7 inches) fell in 48 hours in the Andean foothills – 69% of the annual average. The average rainfall in April is just 7.2mm (0.3 inches).
The local water utility Aguas Andinas’ website tells customers whether they have supply or not, and if not where alternative supply points have been set up.
More extreme weather events is one of 6 big challenges that i2O’s clients have to deal with, alongside increasing population size and urbanisation, ageing network infrastructure, an ageing workforce, customers becoming more demanding, and static or declining revenues.
i2O’s oNet solution can help utilities to schedule intermittent supply predictably and reliably, delivering the best customer service possible in difficult circumstances.
